# Extract boundaries and buildings

Copy outlines of places and buildings from Felt's base data as polygon annotations you can style and edit.

Use the Extract tool to copy city, state, county, or building outlines from Felt's base data as polygon annotations.

## Extract a boundary or building

1. Click **Edit map**. If you have Contribute access, click **Contribute**.
2. In the center of the toolbar at the top of the map, click **Add to map**, open **Annotations**, and click **Extract** ![](https://217108486-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmRfGitkyjOEMvVsEyGWN%2Fuploads%2FstSO2QbNrbpRtrWIZ0A3%2Fscissors.svg?alt=media\&token=cab73231-cc0a-49f6-aa1c-8387923cc9c9).
3. Zoom to the level you want. The outline under the pointer is highlighted.
4. Click an outline to extract it. To extract several, **Shift**-drag across them.

Each outline becomes a polygon annotation named after the place. See [Edit annotations](/annotations/edit-annotations.md).

The zoom level determines which outlines the Extract tool offers:

| Level          | Map zoom       |
| -------------- | -------------- |
| Countries      | Below 5        |
| States/Regions | 5 to under 8   |
| Counties/Areas | 8 to under 11  |
| Cities         | 11 to under 14 |
| Neighborhoods  | 14 to under 16 |
| Buildings      | 16 and above   |

This video shows the Extract tool copying outlines from the map.

## Extract features from a layer

The Extract tool uses only Felt's base data. To copy a layer feature, such as one county, as an annotation, click the feature. In its popup, click **···**, then **Duplicate to annotations**. See [Copy layer features to annotations](/annotations/draw-on-the-map.md#copy-layer-features-to-annotations).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/annotations/extract-boundaries-and-buildings.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
