# Export an image or PDF

Save a high-resolution picture of a Felt map for slides, reports, or print, with an optional legend and scale bar.

Use **Export as image** to download your map, or any part of it, as a PNG, JPG, or PDF file for slides, reports, or print.

## Export the map as an image

1. Open the **Felt** menu, under the Felt logo at the top left, and click **File** > **Export as image…**, or press **Shift+Cmd+E** (Mac) or **Ctrl+Shift+E** (Windows). The **Export as image** dialog opens with a preview of your current view.
2. Drag inside the preview to frame the area. Hover over the preview to reveal **Zoom in** and **Zoom out**.
3. Optional: In **Format**, select **PNG**, **JPG**, or **PDF**. PNG is the default.
4. Optional: Turn **Legend** or **Scale bar** on or off. Both are on by default.
5. Click **Export**. The file is named after the map and downloads to your browser's downloads folder.

Keep the tab visible until the download starts, or the export stops.

People who open a public link without being invited can't export.

## Export a specific area or aspect ratio

* To frame an area, such as one country, drag and zoom inside the **Export as image** preview. If the map is rotated, click **Point north** to reset it.
* To set the image's shape, change **Width** and **Height**. For example, use 1920 × 1080 px for a 16:9 slide. Each dimension can be 96–9,600 px.

The image shows the layers and annotations visible on the map. To leave one out, hide it in the [legend](/layers/legend.md) first. Felt's panels and toolbar never appear in the file.

## Export a sharp, high-resolution image

To get a sharper image, raise **Resolution** in the **Export as image** dialog to **3×** or **4×**. The default is **2×**. A 1,000 px wide image exported at **4×** is 4,000 px wide, with points, lines, and labels at their on-screen size.

Increasing **Width** and **Height** doesn't make the image sharper. A larger canvas shows more of the map, but points, lines, and labels keep their pixel size, so they look small.

Blank or white areas in an export mean some tiles didn't finish loading at the export resolution. Felt leaves those tiles out and shows *Some map tiles may not have finished loading*. Try again, or lower **Resolution** to load fewer tiles.

## Choose PNG, JPG, or PDF

In **Export as image**, **Format** sets the file type:

| Format | Use for                               |
| ------ | ------------------------------------- |
| PNG | Lossless quality (the default) |
| JPG    | A smaller file, with a Quality slider |
| PDF | The same image inside a PDF file |

A PDF export is a raster image, so its lines and labels can't be edited in Adobe Illustrator. Felt doesn't export SVG. For editable geometry, [export the layer data](/export-and-print/export-data.md).

A PNG can't have a transparent background. To leave out the basemap, choose a solid color basemap first. See [Basemaps](/styling/basemaps.md).

Felt doesn't export video, GIF, or PowerPoint files. Export a PNG or JPG and insert it into your slide or document.

## Include a legend and scale bar

In **Export as image**, **Legend** and **Scale bar** are on by default.

* Legend: the setting appears only when the map has a legend. Drag the card in the preview to move it. If its contents are cut off, drag its edges to make it larger. Use **Map title**, **Description**, and **Components** to choose what it shows.
* Scale bar: stays in the bottom-left corner. To switch between miles and kilometers, open the **Felt** menu and click **View** > **Units** > **US** or **Metric**.

Every export includes a small Felt logo and the map's data attribution, and neither can be turned off. You can use exported maps and images in print and commercial materials. **Export as image** can't add a north arrow, a title block, or your own logo, and it can't move the scale bar. For any of these, use a [print layout](/export-and-print/print-layouts.md).

## Troubleshooting exports

### "Export failed"

Felt couldn't finish drawing the image. Lower **Resolution**, or **Width** and **Height**, and try again. On an iPhone or iPad, the dialog warns *This device caps canvases at … px per side, so this export may fail* when the image is larger than the device can draw.

### "This browser is too old to export print pages"

Your browser is missing features Felt needs to export. Update it to its latest version. See [System requirements](/administration/system-requirements.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/export-and-print/export-an-image-or-pdf.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
