# Capture field data

Capture points, lines, and polygons in the Felt Field App. Fill in forms, attach photos, and edit features in the field.

Capture points, lines, and polygons in the Field App, then fill in their forms and add photos. Someone with Edit access must first create the layer and form on the web. See [Run a field survey](/field-app/run-a-field-survey.md).

Online, your changes appear right away for everyone viewing the map. Offline, the Field App saves them and syncs them when you reconnect. See [Work offline](/field-app/work-offline.md).

## Add a feature in the Field App

The Field App places each point or vertex at the crosshair in the center of the map.

1. Open the map and tap the **+** button <img src="https://217108486-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmRfGitkyjOEMvVsEyGWN%2Fuploads%2FT2JpsQBf2M0DdcHukjCm%2Ffab%20(1).png?alt=media&amp;token=a0d38547-8091-45be-91eb-6b5401131b26" alt="" data-size="line"> at the bottom right.
2. Under **Add feature**, select a layer from the list of layers you can add to. A crosshair appears.
3. Pan the map until the crosshair is where you want the point or the first vertex. Optional: To use your current location, tap the location button <img src="https://217108486-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmRfGitkyjOEMvVsEyGWN%2Fuploads%2F8tFJWCfcSbOBUQvdf65j%2Flocation-off.svg?alt=media&amp;token=03193d07-202d-4ed1-a9d0-0cfe31692963" alt="" data-size="line">. The crosshair follows you.
4. Tap **Add point**. In a point layer, the layer's form opens.
5. For a line or polygon, pan and tap **Add point** for each remaining vertex, then tap **Next**. The layer's form opens.
6. Fill in the form and tap **Done**. The feature appears on the map for everyone viewing it.

While you draw, tap **Undo** or **Redo** in the toolbar at the top of the screen to step through your changes.

## Add photos to a feature

In the Field App, add photos through the photo field in a feature's form. The photo field comes from an **Image** attribute on the layer. See [Forms](/layers/forms.md).

1. In the feature's form, tap **Add images** in the photo field.
2. Take a photo, or choose one from your phone. The first time, allow Felt to use the camera.
3. Optional: Repeat to add more photos.
4. Tap **Done**.

Each photo can be up to 20 MB. See [Data limits](/upload-anything/data-limits.md). Field photos don't count toward processing or storage. See [Plan usage](/plans-and-billing/plan-usage.md).

## Edit a feature in the Field App

1. Tap the feature on the map, then tap the edit button <img src="https://217108486-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmRfGitkyjOEMvVsEyGWN%2Fuploads%2FENLJeZudD2yYv7HYQo8R%2Fedit.svg?alt=media&amp;token=b43e7ed6-f7f3-4472-84f6-9e16964c72d9" alt="" data-size="line"> in its popup. The form opens, and the feature's vertices appear.
2. Optional: Change the values in the form.
3. Optional: Change the shape. See [Feature shape edits](#feature-shape-edits).
4. Tap **Done**. Your changes appear for everyone viewing the map.

### Feature shape edits

## Delete a feature in the Field App

Deleting a feature removes it from the layer for everyone, and it can't be undone in the Field App.

1. Tap the feature on the map, then tap the edit button <img src="https://217108486-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmRfGitkyjOEMvVsEyGWN%2Fuploads%2FENLJeZudD2yYv7HYQo8R%2Fedit.svg?alt=media&amp;token=b43e7ed6-f7f3-4472-84f6-9e16964c72d9" alt="" data-size="line">.
2. Tap **···** > **Delete**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/field-app/collect-field-data.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
