# Set up the Field App

Introducing the Field App: Felt's mobile app built for seamless data collection workflows on iOS and Android.

The Field App brings Felt's modern mapping experience to your mobile device. Whether you're collecting data in the field, monitoring live operations, or reviewing dashboards between meetings, the Field App connects you to your maps with real-time syncing across devices. Bringing an intuitive interface to field data collection workflows enables seamless collaboration between Felt's mobile and web platforms, which transforms how organizations bridge fieldwork and desktop workflows.

The app includes:

* **Full viewer experience:** access to all your maps and dashboards on mobile
* **Built-in GIS tooling:** measurements, spatial filters, table view, and search
* **Structured data collection:** use Felt layers and surveys to standardize how your team collects field data on the ground
* **Geotagged photos:** use location tracking to attach photos directly to features or location-based comments
* **Offline support:** save maps to your device to work without connectivity and sync automatically when reconnected

Download the Field App from the [Google Play store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.felt.mobile).

## Log in

You need a Felt account to log in to the Field App. [Create an account](https://felt.com/signup) on desktop first, or ask your Felt Admin to invite you to the workspace.

You'll immediately be prompted to log in. Logging in is email-first: enter your email address and tap **Next**, and Felt routes you to the right method — password, Sign in with Google, or SSO. For SSO, your provider is detected automatically from your email.

## Open a map

After logging in you'll be automatically directed to your Felt workspace. You'll see the Felt home view showing you Recents, Felt maps you've recently viewed, by default. Tap on any of the maps to view the full map view.

#### Open map links via email

The Field App supports deep linking for map links, which means when the Field App is installed, opening a map link on mobile will automatically open the map in the Field App. When your email address is invited to a map in the [Share menu](/share/share-a-map.md#share-menu), you will receive an email with a link to view the map. Tapping on the link in the email will automatically open the map in the Field App.

## Contribute

Your ability to **comment** or **collect data** depends on your seat and your permissions on the map being viewed. Anyone with a Felt account can open maps shared with them in the Field App, and any member with a Full Access seat can comment — even with only View permission on the map. Viewer seats can read comments but can't post them. Members with **Contribute** permission can also draw annotations, edit features, and add new features. Members with **Edit** permission have all the same capabilities plus map management. For more detailed information on permissions, see our [FAQ](#frequently-asked-questions).

The Field App is available on all paid plans. Professional and Enterprise both include the full set of field features:

* Mobile data collection
* Adding geotagged photos
* Data editing
* Survey forms with branching logic
* Offline support

Members with Viewer seats can use the Field App to view maps shared with them. To collect or edit data in the field, a member needs a Full Access seat.

<summary>What's the difference between viewing a map on my mobile browser versus the Field App?</summary>

Both experiences are optimized for mobile, but the Field App offers the best mobile experience of Felt maps. We generally recommend downloading the app for Felt maps on mobile.

The Field App also offers features that aren't available in the mobile browser:

* Photo capture for comments
* Surveys and data collection
* Offline support

<summary>How does sharing work on mobile?</summary>

Anyone viewing maps in the Field App needs to have a Felt account, so they should be invited to the map or to your Felt workspace.

Public sharing (access for anonymous viewers via map link) allows viewers to open the map on desktop or mobile browsers.

No, the mobile app is optimized for field work and data collection. To create and design maps, you'll need to use Felt's web app on a tablet or desktop.

There are a few key differences to outline:

* The desktop interface has pink **Edit** /**Done** buttons at the top of the screen to toggle into edit mode, while the mobile experience does not have this toggle.
* A toolbar is visible at the top of the screen while editing on desktop, but the mobile toolbar sits within the pink plus button at the bottom right of the screen for editors.
* The legend sits on the left-hand side of the screen, while the legend on mobile sits in the bottom panel of the view.
* The desktop editing experience requires internet connectivity, while mobile supports offline viewing and editing mode.

Legend interactions, and workspace navigation experiences are very similar across all platforms.

<summary>What types of data can I collect with the Field App?</summary>

On Professional and Enterprise plans you can collect point, line, or polygon data with the Field App. For any of these features you can collect text fields, dates, date time, numbers, true/false, and images.

Any member with a Full Access seat can add comments from the Field App, and members with Contribute or Edit permission can add annotations. Comments can tag existing features (points, lines, or polygons). Members with Contribute or Edit permission can attach photos to comments.

<summary>Can I work offline in the Field App?</summary>

Yes. Open a map, then open the **Felt menu**, choose **Offline areas**, and **Download offline area** to download it to your device before heading into the field. You can then view the map, collect and edit data, add annotations, and comment without a connection, and your changes sync automatically when you reconnect. Working with offline areas requires an Editor or Contributor license (on legacy plans) or a Full Access seat (on current plans). Use **data collection** when you need the information to persist as a feature, collect data in a consistent format across your team, manage assets, and create datasets that need to be analyzed in spatial reports. Data collection creates layers in Felt.

Use **comments** when you need to communicate quickly, flag something temporarily, or share observations that don't need to be part of your permanent dataset

Members with **View** permission can:

* Navigate the workspace projects, folders, and maps on mobile
* View maps
* Search on maps
* Change basemap
* Interact with the legend
* Utilize table view
* Read comments
* Post, edit, and delete their own comments, and comment on features *(requires a Full Access seat — Viewer seats can read comments but can't post them)*
* Use Find, Measure, and Spatial filter extensions. Custom AI extensions are Enterprise only.

Members with **Contribute** permission can do everything View permission allows plus:

* Draw annotations
* Add photos to comments
* Draw new features
* Edit existing features
* Collect and edit data offline on saved maps

Members with **Edit** permission can do everything Contributors can do plus:

* Manage map sharing

Offline support follows these same rules on maps saved for offline use: anyone can view offline, members with a Full Access seat can comment, and members with Contribute or Edit permission can also collect and edit data offline. See [Work offline](/field-app/work-offline.md).

Felt supports drawing circles for annotations, measure, and spatial filter extensions. Tap the map to set a center point, then drag your finger across the screen to set the radius and adjust as needed.
