# Work offline

Download a map area to capture and edit data offline in the Field App. Sync changes when you reconnect.

{% hint style="success" %}
Available on the Business and Enterprise plans. [Compare plans](https://felt.com/pricing#compare)
{% endhint %}

Download a map area in the Field App before you lose cell service. You can then view the map and capture data offline. Changes sync when you're back online.

Offline maps work only in the Field App, not in a browser. See [Set up the Field App](/field-app/set-up-the-field-app.md).

## Download an offline area

Download an offline area while you have a connection. The download includes the map's layers and Felt's standard basemaps within a rectangle you choose.

1. In the Field App, open the map.
2. Tap the **···** menu at the top right, then tap **Offline areas**.
3. Tap **Download offline area**.
4. Drag the rectangle to choose the area. The Field App shows the estimated download size. If the download is too large for your phone, make the rectangle smaller.
5. Tap **Download**. The status changes to **Up to date** when the download finishes.

The download saves the map's default view without any changes you've made to the filters. Custom basemaps aren't included, so switch to a standard basemap offline. You can download several areas from the same map or from different maps.

Find your downloaded maps in **Offline maps**, under the **☰** menu on the app home screen. The home screen also works offline. To free up space, tap **···** next to an area in the list of offline areas, then tap **Remove download**.

## What you can do offline

Offline, the Field App follows the same access rules as online. With a seat and Contribute or Edit access to the map, you can add and edit features, fill in forms, attach photos, draw annotations, and add comments. Everyone who downloaded the map can view it, tap features to see their attributes, and use the table.

You need a connection to share the map. To create maps, upload data, or style layers, use Felt on the web.

## How offline sync works

The Field App saves every offline change on your phone as you make it. Your changes stay saved even if you close the app or restart your phone. When your phone is back online, the Field App uploads your changes, including photos, and pulls in changes others made to your downloaded maps. A cloud icon appears at the top of the map while you're offline.

The list of offline areas and **Offline maps** show each downloaded map's status.

| Status                       | Meaning                                                                  |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Downloading | The first download is in progress. |
| Up to date | The area is downloaded, and every change is synced. |
| Syncing | The app is uploading your changes or pulling in others' changes. |
| Changes to sync | You have changes on your phone that haven't uploaded yet. |
| Sync paused, Download paused | The connection dropped. The app resumes when you're back online. |
| Couldn't sync — open to fix | Some changes couldn't upload. Open the map while online to resolve them. |
| Download failed              | The download didn't finish.                                              |

Edits to a Felt Server layer sync to the Felt Server, and from there to every map that uses the layer. See [Felt Servers](/upload-anything/felt-servers.md).

## Troubleshooting offline maps

### Changes still show "Changes to sync" after I reconnect

Your changes are still on your phone. Check that your phone has an internet connection. Then open the Field App and keep it open until the status changes to **Up to date**, especially after adding many photos.

### I can't find Offline areas on a map

**Offline areas** appears only in the Field App, and only for people with a seat. Check that you're in the Field App, not a browser, and ask a workspace admin whether you have a seat. If **Offline areas** opens an upgrade message, your workspace's plan doesn't include offline maps. See [Compare plans](https://felt.com/pricing#compare).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/field-app/work-offline.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
