# Copy and duplicate layers

Reuse a layer on another map, or duplicate it to try a new style. Copies keep their styling and settings.

Copy layers to another map, or duplicate a layer on the same map. A copy keeps the layer's data, styling, filters, popups, components, and legend settings. You can copy vector and raster layers individually, together, or as layer groups. Felt can't place one map inside another; copy its layers instead.

## Copy layers to another map

1. In the legend, select the layer, or **Cmd**-click (Mac) or **Ctrl**-click (Windows) several layers or a group.
2. Press **Cmd+C** (Mac) or **Ctrl+C** (Windows). Or right-click the selection and click **Copy**.
3. Open the map you want to copy the layers to, and click **Edit map**.
4. Right-click the map and click **Paste here**, or press **Cmd+V** (Mac) or **Ctrl+V** (Windows). The layers appear in the legend with their original styling and settings.

To move a layer to another map, copy it there, then delete it from the original map. See [Delete a layer](/layers/organize-layers.md#delete-a-layer). To copy a whole map, see [Duplicate and move maps](/maps/duplicate-and-move-maps.md).

## Duplicate a layer on the same map

Duplicate a layer to try a different style while keeping the original.

In edit mode, click the layer's **···** menu in the legend and click **Duplicate**, or select the layer and press **Cmd+D** (Mac) or **Ctrl+D** (Windows). The copy appears in the legend next to the original.

## How copies stay in step

A copy contains the layer's current data, with any edits. Unless it syncs to a Felt Server, the copy is independent: editing, restyling, or deleting one doesn't affect the other.

Within the same workspace, a copy of a layer synced to a Felt Server stays synced, so data edits to either one appear in both. Only data syncs: styles, filters, legend settings, and components stay separate on each map. To make the copy independent, open its **Data** tab and turn off **Sync**.

To keep one layer's data the same across several maps, publish it to a Felt Server instead of copying it. Every map that adds a synced Felt Server layer shares its data. See [Felt Servers](/upload-anything/felt-servers.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/layers/copy-and-duplicate-layers.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
