# Organize layers

Arrange the layers in a map's legend, and group related layers so people can switch between them with a slider or dropdown.

In edit mode, use the legend to delete, reorder, rename, and group layers. The **List** tab shows every layer and group. To open it, click **Edit map** in the toolbar at the top right of the map, then click **List** at the top of the legend or press **2**.

## Delete a layer

Deleting a layer removes it and its data from this map only.

1. In edit mode, click the layer's **···** menu in the legend.
2. Click **Delete**.

To delete several layers, **Cmd**-click (Mac) or **Ctrl**-click (Windows) each one, then press **Delete**.

{% hint style="info" %}
To bring back a deleted layer, press **Cmd+Z** (Mac) or **Ctrl+Z** (Windows) before you close the map. See [Save and undo changes](/maps/undo-changes.md).
{% endhint %}

## Change the layer order

In edit mode, drag a layer up or down in the **Legend** or **List** tab. To move a layer into or out of a group, or to reorder the layers inside a group, drag it in the **List** tab.

On the map, Felt draws annotations on top, then point layers, line layers, and finally polygon and raster layers. Within each geometry type, layers stack in list order.

## Rename a layer

1. In edit mode, select the layer in the legend.
2. Click the layer's name at the top of the detail panel.
3. Enter the new name and press **Enter**.

To rename a column instead, see [Edit features](/layers/edit-features.md#add-rename-or-delete-attributes).

## Layer groups

A layer group puts related layers, such as a survey's yearly layers, under one name in the legend. People can turn the whole group on or off at once. Uploading an Excel file with several sheets, or a ZIP file with several Shapefiles, creates a group automatically.

### Create a layer group

1. In the **List** tab, **Cmd**-click (Mac) or **Ctrl**-click (Windows) the layers you want to group.
2. Press **Cmd+G** (Mac) or **Ctrl+G** (Windows), or right-click a selected layer and click **Group** > **Group selection**.
3. Enter a name for the group.

To add a layer to a group later, drag it into the group. To take it out, drag it out of the group, or right-click it and click **Group** > **Remove from group**. A group can't contain another group; use several groups instead.

### Group types

{% endhint %}

A group's type sets how people viewing the map switch between its layers. In edit mode, select the group, then select a **Type** in the **Legend** section of the detail panel. Every type except List needs at least two of the group's layers shown in the legend.

| Type | What people viewing the map see | Good for |
| ------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| List | Each layer with its own show and hide control | Layers people may want to combine |
| Slider | A slider that moves through the layers one at a time, in list order | Time steps, such as one layer per year |
| Single-select | A dropdown to pick one layer at a time | Alternatives, such as different scenarios |
| Multi-select | A dropdown to pick any number of layers | A long set of optional layers |

### Layer sliders

A layer slider is a Slider group of vector or raster layers. The slider follows list order, so for a time series, arrange the layers from oldest to newest.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/layers/organize-layers.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
