# Navigate the map

Pan, zoom, and rotate a Felt map. Find coordinates, set the default view, or share a link to a specific view.

Drag a Felt map to pan it, and scroll or pinch to zoom. You can also rotate the map, but you can't tilt it or view it in 3D. To show terrain, add the Global Library's Terrain layer, or add ESRI Hillshade tiles as a custom basemap. See [Terrain, hillshade, and contour lines](/styling/basemaps.md#terrain-hillshade-and-contour-lines).

## Pan and zoom the map

* To pan with the keyboard, press the arrow keys.
* To zoom without scrolling, press **+** or **-**, or click **+** or **-** at the bottom right of the map.
* To zoom to a layer, feature, or annotation, select it and press **F**.
* To zoom to an exact level, press **Cmd+J** (Mac) or **Ctrl+J** (Windows) to open **Jump to zoom**, enter a level up to 23 in **Zoom**, and click **Zoom map**. You can enter up to two decimal places, such as `12.25`.

For the full list of shortcuts, see [Keyboard shortcuts](/getting-started/keyboard-shortcuts.md).

## Rotate the map

* To rotate a Felt map with a mouse, right-click and drag the map.
* On a touch screen, twist two fingers.
* With the keyboard, press **Shift+Left arrow** or **Shift+Right arrow** to rotate in 15° steps.
* To set an exact bearing, press **Cmd+J** (Mac) or **Ctrl+J** (Windows) to open **Jump to zoom**, enter a value from 0 to 360 in **Rotation**, and click **Zoom map**.

A compass ![](https://217108486-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmRfGitkyjOEMvVsEyGWN%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6aeed305e08b952c4154118f38f0ede94e4223d4%2Fcompass.svg?alt=media) appears at the bottom right only while the map is rotated. To return the map to north, click the compass or press **Shift+Up arrow**.

The default view doesn't store a rotation, but a link to the map does. To share a link that keeps the map's rotation, see [Link to a specific view](#link-to-a-specific-view).

## Set the default view

A map's default view sets the location and zoom level everyone sees when they open it. Without one, Felt fits the view to the map's layers and annotations. You need Edit access to set it.

1. Click **Edit map** in the toolbar at the top right of the map.
2. Pan and zoom the map to the view you want.
3. Open the **Felt** menu and click **View** > **Set current view as default**. Felt confirms with *Saved current view as default*.

To go back to fitting the map to its contents, open the **Felt** menu and click **View** > **Restore default view**. Press **0** at any time to return to the default view.

People can still move away from the default view. To keep people inside an area or a range of zoom levels, use [map constraints](/maps/map-settings.md#map-constraints).

## Link to a specific view

When you click **Copy link** in the **Share** menu, Felt adds your current location, zoom level, and rotation to the link's `loc` parameter:

`https://felt.com/map/Kontur-Population-yiQAmRZ9CTTK49CHfYp9AauvC?loc=32.55,23.37,3.26z`

The `loc` value contains the latitude and longitude at the center of the view, then the zoom level followed by `z`. When the map is rotated, it ends with the bearing followed by `b`, such as `,45b`. Edit these values to share or embed other views. See [Embed a map](/share/embed-a-map.md).

## Find coordinates on the map

Right-click a point on the Felt map to open a menu with its latitude and longitude. On a touch screen, touch and hold the point instead. Click the coordinates to copy them, with more decimal places than the menu shows. To view the same location in another map, click **Open in** in the menu and select **Google Maps**, **Google Street View**, or **OpenStreetMap**.

To go to coordinates, enter them in the Search tool at the top right. Search accepts decimal degrees, degrees and decimal minutes, and degrees, minutes, and seconds, with latitude first. See [Search](/tools/search.md).

## Hide the interface to present a map

To hide Felt's panels and toolbar so the map fills the window, press **Cmd+.** (Mac) or **Ctrl+.** (Windows). Press the shortcut again to show them. You can also click **View** > **Hide UI** in the **Felt** menu.

## Frequently asked questions

<details>

<summary>Can I save several views of a map to switch between during a presentation?</summary>

No. Felt has no saved views, bookmarks, map tours, or story maps; each map has one default view. To return to other views, copy a link to each view and open the links in turn. See [Link to a specific view](#link-to-a-specific-view). For a story-map-like experience, use a [custom extension](/developers/extensions.md) or the [JavaScript SDK](/developers/javascript-sdk.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I change the map projection?</summary>

No. Felt displays every map in Web Mercator (EPSG:3857), so projections such as Equal Earth or polar stereographic (EPSG:3031) aren't available. Your data doesn't need to be in Web Mercator, because Felt reprojects uploaded files for display.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/maps/navigate-the-map.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
