# Save and undo changes

Learn how Felt saves changes automatically and how to undo or redo edits. Keep map copies as backups because Felt has no version history.

Felt saves every change to a map as you make it, so there's no **Save** button. To undo, press **Cmd+Z** (Mac) or **Ctrl+Z** (Windows). Felt has no version history, so duplicate the map before making a big change.

## Felt saves changes automatically

Felt saves changes made in edit mode immediately, and everyone with the map open sees them in real time. Changes made in view mode, such as zooming or hiding a layer, affect only your view and last only for your session. To enter edit mode, click **Edit map** in the toolbar at the top right of the map, or press **Shift+E**. People with Contribute access see **Contribute**. See [Tour the interface](/getting-started/tour-the-interface.md).

Felt needs an internet connection to save changes in the browser. To capture data without a connection, use the Field App. See [Work offline](/field-app/work-offline.md).

## Undo and redo changes

Undo in Felt steps back through your own changes since you opened the map in this tab, one change at a time. It covers annotations, layers (including adding or deleting one), feature edits, and the map's title and description.

* To undo, press **Cmd+Z** (Mac) or **Ctrl+Z** (Windows).
* To redo, press **Shift+Cmd+Z** (Mac) or **Ctrl+Shift+Z** or **Ctrl+Y** (Windows).

Closing or reloading the map clears the undo history but keeps your changes. Edits Felt AI makes can't be undone. See [AI assistant](/felt-ai/ai-assistant.md).

## Go back to an earlier version of a map

Felt doesn't keep a version history of maps or layers, so make a copy before a big change:

* To keep a copy of the whole map, duplicate it. The copy's synced Felt Server layers share data edits with the original, though styles, filters, legend settings, and components stay separate. For an independent backup, turn off **Sync** in the **Data** tab of each synced layer in the copy. See [Duplicate and move maps](/maps/duplicate-and-move-maps.md#what-a-copy-includes).
* To keep a copy of one layer, open its **···** menu in the legend and click **Duplicate**. See [Duplicate layers](/layers/copy-and-duplicate-layers.md#duplicate-a-layer-on-the-same-map).

To return to an earlier version, work from the copy and delete the edited version. Support can restore a deleted map if you contact them within 7 days. See [Delete a map](/maps/organize-maps.md#delete-a-map).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/maps/undo-changes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
