Icons

Style point layers with symbols, emoji, images, or logos, with a different icon for each category.

Icons replace a point layer's circles with a symbol, an emoji, or an image you upload, such as your logo. You choose them in the style editor (the Style tab of the detail panel), and they work with the Simple, Categories, and Size range visualization types. See Style vector layers.

Choose an icon

1. Click Edit map, then click the point layer in the legend.

2. In the Points section, click Icon. The Icon picker opens.

3. Select an icon in the Symbols, Emoji, or Custom tab. See Custom icons.

4. Optional: For a symbol, choose Circle frame, Square frame, or No frame.

Built-in symbols use the layer's color. Emoji and custom icons keep their own colors, even in a Categories style. To color icons by category, use symbols or upload a separate icon for each color. To resize icons, change Size in the Points section. To show plain points when zoomed out, turn on Show points when zoomed out in the Icon picker and enter a zoom level.

To give each category its own icon, such as one for each type of point of interest, style the layer with Categories. Then select each category in the All Points menu and choose its icon. See Categories and Style each category or class.

Custom icons

Custom icons are uploaded images, such as logos, that you can use in one map or across a workspace. Adding icons to the workspace needs Edit or Admin access to the workspace.

1. In the Icon picker, click the Custom tab, then click Upload icons.

2. Select up to 400 image files, such as PNG, JPG, or SVG, and click Upload icons.

3. Review each icon's Name and Theme.

4. Under Add icons to, select your workspace or This map only.

5. Click Add icons to this map, or Add icons to followed by your workspace's name. The icons appear in the Custom tab.

Felt scales each icon to the height of an emoji. Use a transparent background so the icon doesn't show as a box. To rename or remove icons, click Edit icons in the Custom tab.

Frequently asked questions

What shapes can I use for point markers?

Points are circles by default. For squares, triangles, stars, or map pins, choose a built-in symbol, or upload a custom icon.

Can I set icons in FSL or the API?

Yes. Set a layer's iconImage in Felt Style Language (FSL) through the style language editor or the REST API. The FSL icon docs list symbol names and emoji syntax. For a custom icon, select it in the Icon picker, then copy its iconImage value from the FSL.
