# WMS / WMTS

Add WMS or WMTS imagery to Felt as a map layer or shared source. Check supported versions and required URL parameters.

A Web Map Service (WMS) or Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) is an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard for serving map images, such as NOAA or NASA GIBS imagery. Felt adds a service's layers to maps as raster layers and requests their images from the service as the map loads, so WMS and WMTS layers don't count toward your workspace's processing limit. You can add a service to one map from a URL, or connect it as a source that everyone with access can use on any map.

## Add a WMS or WMTS layer to a map

Add a WMS or WMTS layer from a URL that meets the [URL requirements](#url-requirements).

1. In the center of the toolbar at the top of the map, click **Upload Anything** > **From URL**.
2. Paste the service's URL and click **Add to map**. The layer appears in the legend.

See [Add data from URLs](/upload-anything/urls.md).

## Connect a WMS or WMTS source

Connecting a WMS or WMTS source needs Edit access to the workspace. Follow the steps in [Add a source](/upload-anything/data-sources/add-a-source.md#connect-a-source), select **WMS / WMTS**, and in **Connection**, enter the service's **URL**. If the server accepts requests only from known addresses, [allow Felt's IP addresses](/upload-anything/data-sources/add-a-source.md#allow-felts-ip-addresses). Felt lists each of the service's layers in **Data sources**. To show one on a map, select it and click **Create layer**.

## URL requirements

Felt reads the service's capabilities from its URL, so the URL must point to the service itself, not to one tile or image.

* The URL must contain `wms` or `wmts`, regardless of capitalization, such as `https://example.com/geoserver/wms`.
* Felt requests the service over HTTPS, even from an `http://` URL. A server that supports only HTTP doesn't work.
* Felt supports WMS 1.3.0 and 1.1.1, and WMTS 1.0.0. To force a version, add a `version` parameter.
* To add only some layers, list them in the `layers` parameter (WMS) or the `layer` parameter (WMTS). Otherwise, Felt adds every layer in the service.
* Felt keeps other parameters, such as an API key or a `style`.

Felt requests WMS images in Web Mercator (EPSG:3857), so the server must support that projection. A WMTS layer in another projection is reprojected.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/upload-anything/data-sources/wms-wmts.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
