# Supported file types

See which file formats you can upload to Felt, from Shapefiles and GeoTIFFs to spreadsheets and CAD drawings, and what to do with files Felt can't read.

Use [Upload Anything](/upload-anything/files.md) to add vector and raster data, spreadsheets, CAD drawings, GPS tracks, images, and PDFs. Upload files directly or in a `.zip`, `.7z`, `.rar`, `.tar`, or `.gz` archive. To add data from a link instead, see [Add data from URLs](/upload-anything/urls.md). For file size and other caps, see [Data limits](/upload-anything/data-limits.md).

## Vector data

| Format                                | Extensions                                                                                          |
| ------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Shapefile | `.shp` with `.shx` and `.dbf`, and usually `.prj`. Upload the parts together or in one `.zip` file. |
| GeoJSON and newline-delimited GeoJSON | `.geojson`, `.json`, `.geojsonl`, `.geojsons`, `.geojsonseq`                                        |
| GeoPackage                            | `.gpkg`                                                                                             |
| GeoParquet                            | `.parquet`                                                                                          |
| File Geodatabase | A folder ending in `.gdb`. Zip the folder before you upload it. |
| KML and KMZ                           | `.kml`, `.kmz`                                                                                      |
| ArcGIS layer and map packages         | `.lpk`, `.lpkx`, `.mpk`, `.mpkx`                                                                    |
| OpenStreetMap extracts                | `.osm`, `.osm.pbf`                                                                                  |
| GPS tracks and waypoints              | `.gpx`, `.tcx`, `.fit`, `.gpi`                                                                      |
| CAD drawings                          | `.dxf`, `.dwg`. See [AutoCAD](#autocad).                                                            |

Felt also tries other vector formats that [GDAL](https://gdal.org/drivers/vector/index.html) reads. If one doesn't work, convert it to GeoPackage or GeoJSON. When a vector file has no projection information, Felt assumes latitude and longitude (EPSG:4326).

A KML or KMZ file with several folders uploads as a layer group with one layer per folder. Felt doesn't keep the file's colors or icons, so style the layers in Felt after you upload.

A GPX, TCX, or FIT file creates a layer for each kind of data it contains: tracks as lines, and track points and waypoints as points. Files with several kinds of data create a layer group.

### AutoCAD

To place an AutoCAD drawing accurately, assign an earth-based coordinate system, such as an EPSG code, and draw at real coordinates in that system before you upload the drawing to Felt. Otherwise, Felt guesses the location from the drawing's extent. Felt may skip objects from AutoCAD vertical products, such as Civil 3D surfaces. To keep them, explode them into plain AutoCAD geometry before you save the drawing.

## Raster data

Raster data includes aerial and satellite imagery and elevation models (DEMs, DSMs, and DTMs).

| Format                                    | Extensions                                                                                                                                  |
| ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| GeoTIFF and Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) | `.tif`, `.tiff`                                                                                                                             |
| Raster GeoPackage                         | `.gpkg`                                                                                                                                     |
| ASCII grid                                | `.asc`, `.xyz`                                                                                                                              |
| PNG or JPEG with a world file             | `.png` or `.jpg` with `.pgw`, `.jgw`, or `.wld`. Upload both files together.                                                                |
| Virtual Raster (VRT) | `.vrt`. The source rasters it references must be reachable online. See [VRT mosaics](/upload-anything/stream-large-rasters/vrt-mosaics.md). |

See [Raster and imagery](/upload-anything/files/raster-and-imagery.md).

## Spreadsheets

Felt reads Excel (`.xlsx`, `.xls`, `.xlsm`), CSV and other delimited text (`.csv`, `.tsv`, `.psv`, `.txt`), and Apple Numbers (`.numbers`) files. To place rows on the map, include coordinates, addresses, or place names or codes. A spreadsheet without location columns becomes a table you can join to another layer. See [Spreadsheets and geocoding](/upload-anything/files/spreadsheets-and-geocoding.md).

## Images and PDFs

Images and PDFs upload as image [annotations](/annotations/draw-on-the-map.md#add-images-pdfs-links-and-video), not as data layers, so you can move, resize, and rotate them on the map. Felt reads JPEG (`.jpg`, `.jpeg`), PNG (`.png`), HEIC (`.heic`), WebP (`.webp`), SVG (`.svg`), PDF (`.pdf`), and other common image formats. Images have a smaller maximum size than data files. See [Data limits](/upload-anything/data-limits.md).

Felt places each image where you drop it. When photos have GPS location data, such as in the file's EXIF metadata, Felt shows *Images have location data.* Click **Move to location** to move each photo to where it was taken.

Felt doesn't georeference an image or PDF from control points, and doesn't read coordinates stored in a PDF. To place a scanned map or plan at exact coordinates, georeference it in QGIS or other GIS software first. Then upload the GeoTIFF (`.tif`), or the PNG or JPEG with its world file (`.pgw`, `.jgw`, or `.wld`), as [raster data](#raster-data).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.felt.com/upload-anything/files/supported-file-types.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
