Converting Elements ↔ Layers

Convert between editable elements and data layers for flexible mapping.

Felt allows you to convert your map content between elements and layers, giving you flexibility in how you work with and visualize your spatial data.

Elements vs. Layers

Elements are individual map objects that live at the top of your map. They're excellent for creating data or adding annotations to your map.

Layers provide more advanced visualization options and data-driven styling capabilities. Converting elements to layers unlocks all the features you have with layers.

Converting elements to layers

Converting elements to layers is particularly useful when you've drawn elements and added attributes that you now want to visualize based on those attributes.

To convert elements to layers:

  • Select the element(s) you want to convert

  • Right-click and go to ActionsConvert to layer

  • Your new layer will appear as a layer on your map and accessible from the legend or list

Converting a layer to elements

Sometimes you may want to convert an entire layer to elements. This can be helpful when you want to make quick edits to individual features or when you want to pull out certain features from a layer to highlight with elements.

To convert layers to elements:

  • Select the layer you want to convert

  • Go to ActionsConvert to elements

  • Your layer data will be transformed into individual elements

Converting specific features to elements

Sometimes you many want to converst specific features within a layer to elements. This can be helpful when you want to pull out certain features from a layer to highlight with elements.

Extract can also be used to fetch pins, lines or polygons from layers.

  • Add a layer to your map

  • Click on the feature you wish to extract

  • Click on the overflow menu in the popup, then on Convert to element

Extracted elements will automatically be removed from your data layer. If you delete the extracted element it will be put back into your data layer.
